| Session Three ends (actually on Monday, but most of the coursework is done today). That means I have finished the grammar, phonology, and second language and culture acquisition classes and am ready to put it all together with the phonetics I learned in session 1 & 2 for an eight week 'Field Methods' course, where I will simulate a linguisitic assignment on the field including continuing to learn a language (in this case - Swahili), and write phonological and grammatical analyses as well as a whole bunch of other stuff I haven't learned yet. I am so thankful to be doing Bible translation work in an age where we have computers as tools to organize, catalog, and process. Back in the day, people had to write stuff on index cards and put it in a shoebox and then type stuff out (on a typewriter - gasp!). Of course if you needed to revise something, that meant you were typing it all over again. An old timer around here remarked that he is sure that God allowed mankind to make technological advances with computers so that more of the world's languages could receive His word! Anyways, those tools are what I'll be learning more about the next eight weeks, while Maya takes a Cultural Anthropology class at that same time. Thanks for continuing to hold us and our family up in prayer! God is good! |
